The Iberian Peninsula is a water-scarce region that is increasingly reliant on groundwater. Climate change isexpected to exacerbate this situation due to projected irregular precipitation patterns and frequent droughts. This scientific article utilised convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to assess the direct effect of climate change on groundwater levels, using monthly meteorological data and historical groundwater levels from 3,829 wells.

A multi-decadal groundwater level data analysis to evaluate long-term trends and drivers of groundwater levels, using 60 years of data from Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy, and showing the critical need for systematic groundwater monitoring and sustainable management to face water scarcity challenges. This article originally published in English was translated in German in the February 2025 issue of Korrespondenz Wasserwirtschaft on the DWA website.

This paper presents the results of the 2022 Groundwater Time Series Modelling Challenge, where 15 teams from different institutes applied various data-driven models to simulate hydraulic-head time series at four monitoring wells. Three of the wells were located in Europe and one was located in the USA in different hydrogeological settings in temperate, continental, or subarctic climates.
