Fourth Mujib Basin National Committee Meeting Advances Sustainable Water Management Efforts

On 9 August 2025, the Fourth Meeting of the Mujib Basin National Committee was held at the Landmark Hotel in Amman, gathering representatives from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Municipalities, the Jordan Valley Authority, Mutah University, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, and various experts and stakeholders in the water sector.

The session, opened by H.E. Dr. Jihad Al-Mahamid, reviewed the current water situation in Jordan with a focus on the Mujib Basin, and outlined measures to improve water resources management. Presentations covered the OurMED Project’s objectives and the basin’s potential as a pilot site, participatory irrigation management models, water resource mapping, and the 2024/2025 rainy season status, which recorded only half of the expected rainfall average.

Discussions highlighted the urgent need for adaptive measures, the benefits of establishing a voluntary water association, and the integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance environmental resilience. The meeting concluded with recommendations to conduct a comprehensive study on farming conditions in the basin, monitor rainfall impacts, and strengthen community engagement in water management.
